"In computer terminology, a honeypot is a trap set to detect, deflect, or in some manner counteract attempts at unauthorized use of information systems."1

In Biblical terminology it is a purposeful distraction left by God for the swine to become deluded, lest they find the pearls and mock those:

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. (Matthew 7:6)

Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, critics will reflect what is in their hearts onto the text. Readers of the Book of Mormon will come across two types of verses. If Christ is in them, they will cleave to verses like in Example 1:

Example 1

And we talk of Christ we rejoice in Christ we preach of Christ we prophesy of Christ and we write according to our prophecies that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins (2 Nephi 25:26)

If Christ is not in them, they will cleave to verses like in Example 2 - the Honeypots

Example 2

He saw that there people had been slain by the sword already nearly two millions of his people and he began to sorrow in his heart yea there had been slain two millions of mighty men and also their wives and their children (Ether 15:2)

Jesus taught in parables so the ungodly could neither find nor mock the pearls.

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. (Luke 10:21)

13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: (Matthew 13)

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thes. 2)

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. (James 4:3)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If a beholder of the Book of Mormon does not see beauty, i.e. the words of Jesus, it is because Jesus is not in them:

26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: (John 10)

Some known Book of Mormon Honeypots:

  • Population of the slaughtered armies.
  • Materials like "silk."
  • A french word like "Adieu."
  • How long Moroni lived after the final battle.
  • etc.

The Honeypots purposely included in the text have succeeded in sidetracking would-be attackers and have successfully protected the sacred preachings on Jesus. To date, no one has attacked the preaching in the Holy Book of Mormon.
